The Hour of Code

Today our Out of School Club took part in the 'Hour of Code' event organised by Code.org, our youngest programmer was only 5 years old. Our group managed to complete all 20 puzzles in less than the hour.

Several of our participants have already asked to continue with the course and we will keep you updated with their progress.

Rasterizing Images

Today we worked with images using a rasterizing engine. This takes an ordinary image like this.
Our starter image

and then converts into an image that looks like this.
our finished wall art

Basically the software converts the image to dots, like you would see in a newspaper and then spreads them apart to create a massive image - in our case over 1.5m wide.

New Out of School facility taking shape

Here is the main room at the new 'Teens' facility. You can see the Nintendo Wii on the left and X-Box 360 with Kinect sensor on the right.

Also new is the table football game which sees quite a lot of use during the week.

We have just finished putting down the new carpet tiles to provide a comfortable and very colourful floor surface.

The two large tables can be used for everything from arts and crafts to catching up with tonights homework. We even have a stock of jigsaw puzzles and a copy of the world's largest wordsearch book.

This image shows the soft play end of the main room, where the kids can let off a little steam on the padded mats. We also have two computer rooms, complete with a range of music and photography equipment as well as a kitchen/dining room. There is an outside area that can be used with a baskeball hoop and football net. In the pipeline are plans to develop a 'chill out' room with custom seating and access to the BBC iPlayer to allow kids to catch up with their favourite shows.
